May 11, 2023Rosie O’Donnell Lists Manhattan Penthouse
Shacked up since last year in a breezy oceanfront rental in Malibu, from where she frequently posts photos of fiery sunsets to her Instagram account, Rosie O’Donnell has hoisted her Manhattan penthouse on the market with a price of $8.3 million.
The comedian, talk show host, actress, podcaster, activist, and sociocultural rabble-rouser, who has an Emmy and 11 Daytime Emmys under her belt, isn't seeking much profit on the Turtle Bay aerie that she snatched up about six years ago for $8 million, as noted in The New York Times. Indeed, when improvement expenses and real estate fees are factored in, there won't likely be any profit leftover at all. This isn't an unfamiliar scenario to O’Donnell, who a couple of years ago took a million-dollar hit on the sale of a New Jersey mansion and a roughly $2 million loss on the sale of a five-house compound in upstate New York.
Spread over two floors and capped by a meandering roof terrace, the almost 3,600-square-foot penthouse is awash in sunlight and the surrounding cityscape thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. The great room boasts wide-plank Russian oak floorboards, a honed black granite fireplace, a wet bar with a backlit onyx surface, and a professionally installed sound system. Open to the dining room, the kitchen is arranged around a 33-foot-long stainless-steel and wood island snack counter. There are two of most appliances: two sinks, two ovens, and two dishwashers, plus a 70-bottle wine fridge.
Two of the four bedrooms are on the main floor, including the primary suite. A sculptural staircase curls up to the second floor, where there are two more bedrooms, one with a private balcony, and a shared bath. The stairs continue up to a glass bulkhead that provides access to the 1,600-square-foot roof terrace. Triangular forms jut out from the roof and both obscure and mimic the surrounding buildings. A small rooftop room offers storage for patio furniture as well as some conveniences for entertaining two floors up from the kitchen: a fridge, a wine cooler, and a microwave.
O’Donnell, whose most recent TV roles have been in the short-lived neo-noir crime drama "American Gigolo" and the third and final season of "The L Word: Generation Q," has owned numerous homes up and down the eastern seaboard, including in some of the swankier areas of New Jersey and south Florida. She first set her real estate eyes west in late 2021 when she dropped $4.6 million on a modern farmhouse-style home in L.A.'s Beverlywood neighborhood that she flipped back on the market just four months later and quickly sold for its full $4.9 million asking price.
Word on the real estate street is she's keeping her eyes peeled for a place in the ‘Bu where she and her youngest daughter can settle in more permanently.
